Why Was Sodom Judged?

I believe that the statement that God judged and destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah because of homosexuality is erroneous. I further believe that it is a blatant misrepresentation of the truth. And I believe that ministers who have preached this message either by purpose or ignorance will one day stand before God with the blood of thousands of gay teens on their hands. The number one cause of teenage suicide in America is not knowing how to deal with their sexual orientation. Atheism is growing rapidly in the gay community to the shame of Christianity.
The 18 and 19 chapters of Genesis record the account of Sodom and Gomorrah. Lot the nephew of Abraham settled in Sodom. Genesis 13:10-11
The people of Sodom were pagans. Genesis 13:12-13 “Abraham lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tent near Sodom. Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.”
Historians tell us that the religious practices of the people of Sodom consisted of numerous rituals, endless sacrifices and featured acts of sex.
“Then the Lord said. The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me.” Genesis 18:20-21
It is obvious the people of Sodom found Lot’s religion strange. So he and his family were to some degree ostracized. Abraham learned that Sodom was to be destroyed and he was concerned for his nephew, Lot.
Abraham bargained with God that if he could find a certain number of righteous people that he would spare Sodom. It started with 50 and was soon down to just 10. But Abraham could not even find 10 righteous people in the city.
Genesis 19 records what actually happened in Sodom. Two visitors appearing as human beings came to the city. Lot opened his home to these strangers. The ancient law of Hammurabi was ignored by these people, a law that dealt with hospitality. Remember this is a desert setting and food and water are scarce so this law was very important. In Genesis 19:8b “they (his house guests) have come under the protection of my roof.”
As evening approached the men from the city came to Lot’s house and demanded that the two strangers be brought out to them. They would deal with these strangers in the most humiliating way possible they would rape them.
The Hebrew word YADA is translated in the King James Version. This Hebrew word means “to know,” “totally,” “fully,” “carnal knowledge,” or “rape.” The NIV translation reads “…so that we can have sex with them.” Rape is always wrong whether heterosexual rape or homosexual rape. Homosexual rape is commonly practiced in our day. It happens regularly in our prison system. Men raping men. Usually, though not always, these men are heterosexuals.
I have yet to this day heard a Christian leader speaking out against what is happening within our prison system. Sodom was clearly to be a case of gang rape. In ancient and even modern times as we witnessed in the Iraqi prison invading armies would rape both the men and women of their defeated foes.
The two strangers came to Lot to warn him of impending judgment so he and his family could escape the wrath of God.
Space will not allow me but the reasons for the destruction of Sodom are recorded in several places in the Bible. Please look them up.Isaiah 1:10-20 this describes Israel’s degenerate spiritual condition to the paganism of Sodom.  Isaiah 3:8-9 This scripture is of spiritual wickedness, false preachers and false prophets. Ezekiel 16:47-50 Homosexuality is never mentioned in any of these proof texts. Matthew 10:14-15 Mark 6:11 Luke 10:12  2 Peter 2:6-7
In the book of Revelation, Jerusalem is likened to the spiritual condition that characterized Sodom. The reason for this analogy is due to Jerusalem’s rejection of Jesus Christ!
None of these many scriptures refers to the sin of Sodom as homosexuality. By the way what city, anywhere, would have an entire population of homosexuals? Even in San Francisco, gays are a minority.
Does the word sodomite come from the Genesis account? No! Centuries after the birth of the church, church leaders began to equate homosexuality with the account recorded in the book of Genesis. The word sodomite came into use. Sodomite referred to a resident of Sodom just like Arkansan is used to describe someone who lives in Arkansas
